Resort Repairs & Ongoing Maintenance
Daily repair and maintenance at Doornkop ensures all units remain functional and in good order. Elias, the Maintenance Supervisor, together with Richard, two long-serving staff members with many years of experience, managed operations alone for some time after two workers were dismissed. Doornkop has since appointed two new workers, Sibusiso Ndaba and Fredrick Mthethwa. Both have completed their six-month probationary training and are now permanently employed.
Standard maintenance includes regular inspections and repair of identified faults. Elias inspects each unit weekly, with faults reported and repaired promptly. The Maintenance Team of four is responsible for their assigned units and receives additional fault reports from housekeeping.
Typical issues include:
 BIC door hinges requiring tightening
Broken toilet seats that need replacement
 Worn tap seals requiring replacement
Burnt-out globes and faulty light fittings needing replacement
Broken door locks or windows that require repairs
| |
DSTV signal loss caused by animals rubbing against dishes, requiring periodic resets

Oven rubbers, thermostats, and elements needing replacement as required
Geyser elements and pipes requiring repair
The metal roof of Unit 17 was recently painted with Eco Rubber fireproof sealant. Maintenance at Doornkop is an ongoing daily process to ensure all units remain in top condition.

On 23 August, Doornkop experienced a serious veldfire that ignited near Unit 24. Within minutes of reporting it to Reception, the Reserve’s fire teams were on-site working to contain the blaze. Thanks to their swift and determined response, Units 23 and 25 were successfully protected. However, due to extreme winds, the fire leapt across the main road, resulting in the unfortunate loss of two LOA houses. Following this an extensive investigations were conducted by the Management Team, LOA Board of Directors, and the Umpiluzi Fire Protection Association. Findings confirmed that, despite all precautionary measures being in place, including firebreaks, firefighting equipment and training, sufficient water pressure in fire hose reels, and the immediate response from our trained team, the combination of the fire and exceptionally high winds made it impossible for staff and neighbouring farmers, who rapidly came to our aid, to prevent the unfortunate loss of the two houses.
The Board of Directors has reviewed the current fire prevention measures and has implemented additional procedures to mitigate the risk of similar incidents in the future. We kindly request that all Shareholders adhere to the following Fire Prevention Precautions when visiting the Reserve:

Open Fires
No open fires are permitted outside during strong winds. Fires may only be made in designated braai/fire areas.

Extinguishing Fires
All fires must be properly doused and fully extinguished with water or sand before being left unattended.

General Safety
Always take every precaution to reduce fire risk. Report any uncontrolled or suspicious fires immediately to Reception or Security.

From March to August, we stock the dams monthly with 200–300 trout, including both Rainbow and Brown trout. Since March 2025, over 1,500 fish have been added across the eight dams. Doornkop caters to everyone - from first-time fly-fishers to seasoned anglers. Our experienced Fish Bailiffs, with over 17 years of expertise, provide training, advice, and support to ensure every guest enjoys success on the water. Guests regularly catch Rainbow, Brown, and even Yellow trout, making every visit memorable.
Jacaranda Fishing Club Events
The Jacaranda Fishing Club continues to keep Doornkop on their must-visit list. On 1 August 2024, Vaughan Goertzen set a new record with a 4.2 kg Rainbow trout at Dam 4, beating the previous 3.9 kg mark. During their return on 16 May 2025, each angler averaged ten catches for the weekend. The current record for the most fish caught in a weekend stands at an impressive 206.

During their annual visit, 30 guests enjoyed outstanding fishing against the backdrop of crisp autumn mornings and warm, sunny days. A Bring-and-Braai at the Swimming Pool Lapa, coordinated by Mr. Roy Lubbe brought everyone together, with Doornkop staff helping with setup and catering. The event grows each year, further strengthening Doornkop’s standing as a top fly-fishing destination.

Happy Holiday Celebrations
from the past 6 months

We celebrated all fathers for their leadership, hard work, and dedication to their families. The reception was beautifully decorated to pay tribute to fathers, featuring a special display with Father’s Day gifts from the tuck shop. Guests checking in were offered complimentary sherry, and freshly baked pancakes were handed to fathers on the day by our Resort Manager.

This year, we celebrated Women’s Day with our guests in style. The Reception was decorated to honour women for their important role in making our world a better place. Bran muffins were freshly baked and handed to each guest by our Operations Administrator, Dorette. Special Women’s Day gifts were also prepared and presented to our guests to make the day memorable.
Heritage Day was celebrated as Braai Day at Doornkop. The Reception was decorated with a braai theme, and guests and Staff were invited to a bring-and-braai event at the swimming pool lapa. Due to harsh weather and strong winds, guests were unable to attend. The Resort Manager nevertheless built an outdoor stove and used a Weber braai at the Swimming Pool Lapa to prepare a special braai for the Doornkop staff.

Holiday Options: A Smart, Flexible Benefit
for Every Shareholder |
Holiday Options gives Shareholders far more than standard exchange opportunities - it offers real flexibility, convenience, and value.
Beyond traditional exchanges, members can enjoy Bonus Weeks, which allow for spontaneous, last-minute getaways without using points. Whether it’s a quick midweek break, a weekend escape, or an extra unit for family and friends, Bonus Weeks ensure you never miss out on quality holiday time.
Shareholders can also deposit their intervals (full weeks, midweeks, or weekends) and receive points valid for three years, making future planning easy and rewarding. As long as deposits are made at least eight weeks before occupation and levies are fully paid, points are allocated seamlessly. Even late deposits earn full points, offering additional peace of mind (late deposit fees are applicable)
Holiday Options also streamlines the management of your ownership with two rental placement options, allowing you to earn rental income on weeks you’re unable to use. Shareholders can list full weeks, midweeks, or weekend intervals on Gomelo at their preferred rate, update pricing anytime, and withdraw the listing if it hasn’t rented yet. MyResorts offer rentals based on a daily rate - ideal for Shareholders who prefer flexible, per-night rentals. This option allows your interval to be made available as daily reservations across the MyResorts network, increasing visibility and improving the likelihood of achieving rental income.
With Bonus Weeks, extended point validity, easy online levy management, and a simplified rental system, Holiday Options ensures that Shareholders maximise the value of their ownership - through flexibility, freedom, and effortless control over every holiday opportunity.
