From sun-up to sun-down, every moment spent at Doornkop Fish & Wildlife Reserve is a memory worth cherishing. From waking early to enjoy that first cup of coffee while sitting on the patio and soaking up the views over the waterways, to when a fire is lit in the braai and family and friends gather to share their day’s adventures with sundowner in-hand; these are the memories we’ll savour for a lifetime.

A lifetime seems so long and, yet, 2022 flew right by us. The Doornkop Team has delighted in welcoming valued Shareholders and guests throughout this year, regardless of how short their stays with us felt, and it’s time now for us to share in all these wonderful moments, of days gone by, with you.

Meet your new

Mothers Day

We’ve said our heartfelt goodbyes to Mariana Ras, who made the move to the Western Cape to be with family recently. Her caring and kind nature helped Doornkop grow and, while we’ll certainly miss her, this newsletter is cause for celebration as we welcome Bosman and Dorette Matthyser as Doornkop’s new Management Team! Together, this dynamic duo’s experience spans 7 years in the hospitality industry and there’s no doubt in our minds that Doornkop Fish & Wildlife Reserve is in good, steady hands.

Be sure to spend a moment on your next arrival getting to know this lovely couple!

“Creating the environment for everlasting memories” is our motto; it’s what drives our Team and underpins every decision made in our ongoing mission to provide you, our valued Shareholders, with the best of the best. Here’s everything the Doornkop Team has been giving attention to, to make sure your home-away-from-home continues to shine:

Upgrades

Unit coffee tables were sanded and varnished.

Upgrades

Unit dining chairs were reupholstered.

Upgrades

Unit window and door frames were sanded and varnished.

Chalet Upgrades

Select units have required additional attention during the second half of 2022. Carports were fixed up, heaters were replaced and the patio at unit 15 was rebuilt.

Maintaining and managing a Reserve takes grit, dedication and hard work. While the Doornkop Share Block Team manages the day-to-day operations, maintenance, customer service and hospitality of your home-away-from-home, the Land Owner's Association works tirelessly behind the scenes, as well. Let's take a peek behind the proverbial curtain to find out all about the LOA's latest projects:

Central Complex

Over the course of the past few months, the onsite Team have been hard-at-work, upgrading the thatch roofs of the central complex, which is still in process. The deck, railings and lapa areas have all been varnished, as well as the window and door frames of the main building. The walkways also received some tender love and care having been pressure washed and painted.

Roads

Starting with the entrance gate fences, which have been repaired, the Maintenance Team worked their way back to the Central Complex, modifying access at the main gate for sedan-type vehicles, doing extensive repairs to the 4x4 roads and river crossings, as well as scraping all Reserve roads since the rainy season. The addition of a tractor and a scraper has made this work more efficient and effective.

Waterways

Soil erosion caused by water banks is a natural occurrence and the Doornkop Team do their best to monitor and manage it. A combination of soil, rocks and plants have been used around Dam 5 and 8, as well as the Trophy Dam to help manage the erosion. The benches surrounding the dams also received a lick of paint to keep these areas neat and tidy.

Electricity Supply

Due to a disconnection request placed by the previous developer in 2006, Eskom unexpectedly decommissioned a transformer that was feeding power to a few of the units. To combat this decommission, the Team installed three hundred and ten metres of three-phase cable with switchgear from the closest transformer, which had ample capacity, so that the seven units' power could be restored.

Creating Everlasting

From families with small children to couples, both young and old, so many people relish a holiday at Doornkop Fish & Wildlife Reserve. It warms our hearts to be able to welcome them all to this special place in the countryside, where relaxation and restoration await. The Doornkop Team only amplifies the quality experience guests can enjoy here with the many special touches added to special days and holiday seasons.

Fathers day
Father’s Day
Checking-in at your home-away-from-home unit is always a delight, but it’s even more delightful when there are presents waiting! On Father’s Day this year every Doornkop Dad received a hand-crafted bow tie and a delicious home-baked cupcake as a small token from the Doornkop Team.

Womans Day

Women’s Day

Local is lekker, and so are the incredibly wonderful and fearfully-made women in our lives! To honour their strength and show appreciation for their roles in society and our homes, the Doornkop Team offered each woman visiting Doornkop on Women’s Day beautiful earrings that were made locally.

Heritage Day

Heritage Day

Heritage Day in South Africa is synonymous with one word: braai. To celebrate our diverse cultures and heritage, the Doornkop Team dressed up in their traditional, colourful outfits and braaied some delicious roosterkoek that was later delivered to all our guests, in their units.
