Looking back on the past few months, Kagga Kamma Nature Reserve has experienced a few intriguing moments signalling rebirth. The welcoming of our first Bontebok calf, which has blossomed into a young juvenile. The first pitter-patter of the wet seasons’ rain, rejuvenating the soil and casting verdant green against the stark red sand of the Karoo. The arrival of a few new Team members, bringing with them positive impact and fresh perspective. All these things, and more, show

glimmers of hope that improvements are upon us; the life cycle of this pandemic is already showing signs of drawing to a close and everywhere we can see how this rebirth is amounting to something beautiful. Something to be cherished, appreciated and not taken for granted. So we invite you now, our valued Shareholders, to journey through these pages in preparation for your next cherished holiday at your home-away-from-home.

This highly adaptable species can be found throughout South Africa and into Southern Namibia. They typically remain in Karoo-like regions, hence the name, but absolutely adore water! During mating season, Karoo Toads will claim any viable water source for their offspring, including puddles or rain water found in hoof prints left behind by antelope species.

Known in Afrikaans as the “Bloukop Koggelmander” (which directly translates to “Blue-Headed Lizard”), the males of this species turn a brilliant blue during mating season. This colouration can be controlled, though not to the extent of its cousin the chameleon, so that it may return to muted tones in the presence of a predator.

The Spotted Rock Snake presents with beautiful markings and is perfectly suited to rock dwelling. Much like other snakes, the Spotted females trail pheromones in the mating season, which attracts partners. The gathering males will take part in a dominance duel where the victor is determined by pinning the other male’s head on the ground.

Meet your Nature Guides

Shaun

Shaun hails from Centurion and developed his love of nature from a childhood inspiration: Steve Irwin. His favourite time of day, at Kagga Kamma, is nighttime, when the Milky Way explodes across the night sky and he has a better chance of spotting his favourite prowler, the elusive Cape Leopard. On his off days, Shaun often spends time drawing or honing his photography skills. Many of the flora and fauna photos you’ll see online were taken by this wildlife enthusiast!

Garrick

Garrick is a coastal lad who grew up in Kwa-Zulu Natal. While he adored the sea, he was on the lookout for the adventure of a lifetime and that’s how he landed at Kagga Kamma. For Garrick, the seasons in this region are matchless and he enjoys the vast differences of experiencing the Reserve at different times of the year. His favourite pastime is packing up his hiking gear and heading into the Cederberg wilderness for a day or two with hopes of observing the Cape Cobra.

Andrew

Andrew grew up in Johannesburg and spent many family holidays in the South African bushveld; which is where he came to appreciate his passion for nature and wildlife. One thing Andrew realised upon arriving at Kagga Kamma is that words do not do the spectacular views any justice – and it is the beautiful landscape that is his favourite aspect about the Lodge. You can often spot Andrew presenting on a Reptile Educational, where he shares his fascination of his favourite reptilians with our guests.

Celebrations for a Lifetime of Memories

Our Team is dedicated to offering guests the best possible experience when staying with us. From memorable surprises to themed dinners and holiday entertainment; take a look at the few ways we made everyone’s stay even more special…

Mothers Day

Christmas Day

The Festive Season is always a delight and the Kagga Kamma Team cannot wait to host guests over the December period. A glittering tree, draped in red bows, greeted the arrivals and pretty cupcakes were received as a sweet welcome at Reception. Christmas carollers paid a visit to each Chalet, while Santa Claus granted the children their present wishes. After a particularly difficult year for many, the Executive Chef wowed diners with a beautifully themed dinner as the merry cheer lifted spirits, filling the boma with chatter.
Mothers Day

New Year’s Eve

The New Year’s celebrations felt different this year, not just as we upheld the government-enforced regulations during this period, but special because the hopefulness for a fresh start and better year ahead was palpable. A small celebratory dinner was hosted at the Restaurant with the ever-favourite dessert, dark chocolate mousse cake, closing the year off in a deliciously satisfying manner.

Valentine’s Day

Kagga Kamma’s home language is certainly the language of love and our dedicated Team is the best at providing romantic moments for guests, so it comes as no surprise that Valentine’s Day was such a smashing success! Guests were spoilt with hand-crafted, decadent chocolate truffles and the Restaurant Team went all-out with a mouth-watering dinner hosted beneath the Milky Way. Check-out, post Valentine’s, was a hum, as guests left Kagga Kamma on Cupid’s cloud nine.

Easter Long Weekend

A mischievous Easter bunny joined guests on a leisurely hike over the long weekend and hid a range of treats for families to find along the trail. Other guests spent a lazy lunch enjoying a perfectly-packed picnic to the backdrop of sweeping fynbos views. After a day filled with squeals of delight upon finding the treasures and laughter echoing off the rock formations, everyone gathered for a delicious meal at the Restaurant. The selection consisted of crowd-favourites, such as the tender, braised lamb shank, and warm malva pudding, which was served with a dollop of sunshine-yellow custard.
Mothers Day

Mother’s Day

Mother's Day was a treat for the families who spent their weekend at Kagga Kamma. The dedicated entertainment Team caused some excitement with a fun-filled entertainment programme, which included yummy cupcake decorating in all the colours of the rainbow. Kagga Kamma moms were spoilt with gift boxes of perfectly iced, sugar cookies or decorated buttercream cupcakes laid in their rooms, as well as novelty key rings with 'Happy Mother's Day' scripted in gold. Families eagerly guided mom to dinner at the boma where a delectable feast beckoned. A selection of dinner favourites graced the tables and the evening was accompanied by a collective feeling of appreciation for all our Kagga Kamma mothers.

African Blessings

AFRICAN BLESSINGS
Jochebed Children's Village is the heart of African Blessings and the vision upon which the charity organisation was founded. Jochebed comprises of 16 cottages (of which two are currently complete, furnished and occupied) set on the African Blessings Farm. Rather than operate in the mannerisms of the traditional orphanage, each child is placed with a loving family and will grow to reach their full potential within a functional household on the property. There is a well-known African proverb that says "It takes a village to raise a child". It certainly rings true and we believe that the entire African Blessings Farm community and all living here are responsible for shaping and positively influencing the lives of the children; educating and raising them to be leaders.
This is only the start of our vision – help us reach our dreams of offering this safe haven to more children in need.
