Each year the seasons wash over the Mpumalanga countryside, changing from lush green and caressing warmth to golden wheat and cosy evenings snuggled by a fireplace, and then, with a single seedling sprouting through the dry undergrowth, vibrancy returns. Just as our beloved paradise moves through periods of drought and cold, so too can every South African be well pleased at having worked through the tremulous year which 2020 proved to be. As the country re-emerges from a state of hibernation and challenge, we are grateful for having your valued support throughout this period.

Our sights are set on welcoming you home to your preferred holiday destination for more cherishable moments, bright laughter under the warm African sun and everlasting memories of your 'gem of Mpumalanga'.

Let us work together now, as we turn away from 2020, appreciative of the lessons and experiences which have taught us so much, and step into the New Year; a fresh start.

Take a moment to reflect on the previous year with us…

From the Desk of the Resort Manager
Valentine's Day

Dearest Shareholder,

Although this year has held many challenges, we have used the time to continue to improve both our services and the Resort. The Doornkop Team has completed a number of onsite projects to ensure the best possible holiday environment for all and it certainly rounded-off the accomplishments, being able to welcome so many familiar faces back to visit the Resort once more and to share in these improvements.

The seasons have, once again, shifted and transformed Doornkop into a beautifully green paradise, since the first summer rains arrived in mid-October. Fishing at the Resort has started on a high note as Doornkop dams have been restocked and the trout began spawning; offering up a tremendous challenge.

On a final note the Doornkop staff are excited to usher in the New Year with new opportunities for creating everlasting holiday memories and are dedicated to establishing Doornkop as one of the top holiday destinations in the area.

I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank VRS Managing Director, Marjorie Forssman, for her boundless encouragement, continual guidance and endless enthusiasm, as well as her constant drive for all of us to be the absolute best we can. We are looking forward to the Festive Season and to what the next year holds for Doornkop Fish & Wildlife Reserve.

We look forward to seeing each and every one of you soon.

Warmest Regards

Debbie Jenkinson

Sightseeing Near Doornkop

Doornkop Fish & Wildlife Reserve is at the heart of your ultimate breakaway; boma braais, sunny days spent poolside, tranquil mornings along a dam…. Such pure moments of bliss. But occasionally, it’s nice to venture beyond the gates and expand your holiday horizon! Here are a few spots worth paying a visit to…

Nooitgedacht Dam Nature Reserve

Centrally located in the Highveld region, this 3000ha Nature Reserve is home to wildlife you may have seen at Doornkop. A while back, however, Nooitgedacht welcomed a herd of buffalo onto the property. Pack a cooler with your favourite treats and take a self-drive to try and spot one of the Big 5 when next visiting Doornkop!

Millys Restaurant

Built in 1974, this road-side Restaurant and Farmstall has stolen the hearts of many South African’s and is the perfect pit-stop for a tasty bite overlooking a dam en-route to Doornkop. Many people don’t know that Milly was, in fact, a real person and her famous trout pie and many of her jams and preserves are all family recipes. Why not pop in for a meal or grab a box of the famous trout pies to enjoy in your Doornkop Chalet?!

Badplaas, A Forever Resort

Day visitors to the popular Badplaas facilities enjoy a range of decadent spa treatments and spend a blissful day soaking in the heated pools. Located a mere 45-minute drive from Doornkop, Badplaas offers a relaxing experience for a day outing the whole family can enjoy. Kindly do take note that day visitors are limited currently, due to lockdown restrictions, and it is best to call ahead should you want to spend the day out-and-about.

Maintaining Manicured Grounds
Ngwenya News

Due to the intention of Doornkop Fish & Wildlife Reserve, as well as that of the Board of Directors, to provide and maintain a hazard-free environment, the decision was made to fell and/or trim a small selection of trees and shrubbery on the Reserve and around certain Chalets. This decision was made in the best interest of the ongoing preservation of the Nature Reserve and integrated Resort facilities; and the management and prevention of any potential fire hazard. Rest assured that, while you may notice minor changes with regards to the greenery within the immediate surrounds of your home-away-from-home Chalet, the Doornkop Team’s ongoing mission is to provide a safe holiday environment for guests, while preserving this beautiful, natural environment in the heart of the Mpumalanga countryside.

The Doornkop Team would like to introduce our newest team member: Portia Malutsi. Portia joined the Housekeeping Department during October this year. Her wonderfully cheerful and positive nature makes her a great addition to the Team. Say hi when you see her on your next visit!

A major storm descended on Doornkop in mid-October this year, washing away the dust of the winter and nourishing the valley. Since then deep emerald greens have transformed the space and the wildlife has become more active.

The trout are spawning and are giving our fisherfolk a challenge! We look forward to welcoming fishing enthusiasts to beat the best catch of the new season so far, a catch of 1.720kg!

Doornkop is a prized home-away-from-home holiday destination for a number of families. In our effort to maintain a high quality Resort for ultimate happy holidaying enjoyment, the dedicated Team works consistently to address areas which require some tender-love-and-care.

Upgraded the DSTV package in all Chalets to offer guests 80+ channel options
Reception has been updated with fresh paint, new carpets and scatter cushions. New curtains and blinds arriving soon
The Kiosk now stocks a wide range of souvenirs, such as bags and wallets, as well as a variety of toys and fun games for the kiddies
The Games Room has been repainted and received some new décor
The last nine Chalets received new thatched roofs
All double and the majority of the king-size beds have been replaced
It’s all about the everlasting holiday memories

For a while, this year, we sorely missed our guests’ company – the units stood unoccupied, no laughter or columns of braai smoke rising into the air; the wildlife ventured near, intrigued by the quiet and the trout grew restless in the dams, no challengers to tire them out. Soon, however, the welcome news of lockdown easing arrived and we raced to the gate to start welcoming visitors. We’d like to say thank you to all of you for bringing back our smiles and colouring our Resort in bright hues once more.
